We have particular knowledge and expertise in the legal proceedings in which our clients confront day to day: procedural law, company law, regulatory-administrative law along with real estate, labour, tax and economic crime law and legal compliance.

Santiago Thomas de Carranza is a co-founder of the firm. Practicing lawyer. Economist. University Professor. After finishing his university studies, he prepared for the competitive examinations to the body of Law Clerks of the Council of State. In 1997 he joined Melchor de las Heras Law Firm as a lawyer, where he was part of the commercial law and public law departments. In 2003, he founded the firm Thomás de Carranza Abogados, of which he is currently managing partner.

Santiago has extensive practical experience in the field of commercial and financial law as well as in administrative regulatory law (contentious and advisory) and procedural law.

He has participated in numerous transactions involving the purchase and sale of companies, investment and disinvestment, venture capital, as well as in the preparation, negotiation and drafting of contracts, agreements and collaboration agreements between companies of different types. He has also advised on the start-up and development of numerous business processes, both in Spain and abroad, working regularly with lawyers from different countries and jurisdictions (start-ups; development capital; shareholder agreements; mergers; spin-offs; separation processes; etc.), and has also participated in the design and implementation of different sale and purchase and financing structures, mainly linked to the real estate sector and the field of renewable energies, advising his clients both in the preliminary phase of construction, supply and start-up of the facilities, as well as in the financing phase.

In the area of administrative regulatory law, Santiago has considerable practical experience in both the advisory and procedural fields. He has advised the Ministry of Public Works in the development of the toll road program and its adaptation to the new financing techniques, as well as other public entities and organizations. He has also advised different individuals and private entities in their relations with the Public Administrations in matters as diverse as service and public domain concessions (water, ports, roads, etc.), urban planning, real estate regulatory laws, environment, expropriations, energy, public liability, etc. Santiago has participated in numerous transactions involving the acquisition and sale of companies operating in the public administration sector (energy, concessionary companies and contractors of the public administration, telecommunications, radio, etc.), as well as in the incorporation and management of regulated entities (venture capital companies, investment services companies, etc.).

In the field of procedural law, Santiago has more than 20 years of experience, mainly in the field of contentious-administrative jurisdiction and civil and commercial jurisdiction. He has also participated as counsel in different arbitration proceedings (both in law and equity). He has been Chairman of the Appeals Committee of the Royal Spanish Equestrian Federation (2008-2010) and is currently Chairman of the Sports Disciplinary Committee of the Royal Spanish Equestrian Federation, of which he has been a member since 2010. He is also an arbitrator in the AEADE Court of Arbitration.

As far as his links to the university world are concerned, only mentioning that Santiago has been a professor of civil procedural law and contentious-administrative law at the School of Legal Practice of the Complutense University of Madrid since 2000; professor of administrative law at the Francisco de Vitoria University since 2001; member of the Faculty and Academic Council of the Master in European Union Law at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid since 2012 (professor of professional deontology); professor of administrative law at the Instituto de Estudios Bursátiles (IEB) since 2019; and guest lecturer at the Master in Radio of the COPE Foundation (fundamental civil rights). He is the author of various doctrinal studies and articles and has had the honour of participating as a speaker at various legal seminars.
